Release

The discharge of a claim or right against another person. For example, a plaintiff may discharge the liability of a defendant in return for a cash settlement.

Respondent

One who answers to a bill or other proceeding in equity. In appellate practice, the party who contends against an appeal. In civil law, one who answers or is security for another.

Restraining Order

An order issued by a court requiring the person against whom it is issued to refrain from doing a particular thing.

Restrictive Covenant

Clauses in contracts of partnership and employment which limit a contracting party after termination of the contract in performing similar work for a period of time and within a certain geographical area. A restrictive covenant is commonly referred to as a “No Compete” or “Non-Competition” Agreement.

Reversal

The annulling or setting aside by an appellate court of a decision of a lower court.

Rules made by the Supreme Court of New Jersey which govern the practice and procedure in New Jersey State Courts.
